He’s Back! Fred Raulston Returns to North Coast Brewing Company as New Music Director

More Performances Are Coming to the Sequoia Room

Back in 1988, when North Coast Brewing first opened its doors, vibraphonist Fred Raulston led the jazz band that played on Saturday nights in the pub. Well-known in jazz circles around the country, Fred performed with an assortment of local musicians and visiting artists from the Bay Area, Los Angeles and the East Coast. Sometime in 1997 Fred left the coast to pursue other interests, but in February of this year he returned to North Coast Brewing to expand and grow the musical programming and performances in the brewery’s Sequoia Room.

Fred’s experience – as a musician, recording artist, recording engineer, jazz educator and jazz festival director – makes him especially well-suited for his current position as Music Director with North Coast. He has plans to bring some of the finest jazz artists in the world to perform in the Sequoia Room, expand the musical programming to include a variety of genres and include the local community of musicians in the mix. “I’m proud to be part of the team that believes in the power of music, supports jazz education, jazz festivals across the country, has contributed generously to the Thelonious Monk Institute and donates to over 100 local non-profit organizations.”

Fred says the dinner shows and concerts in the Sequoia Room will offer coastal residents and visitors access to special programs and quality experiences that are usually only available in larger urban areas. The room will feature an excellent sound and recording system, and now has a new-to-the-brewery seven-foot Baldwin concert grand piano.

Involved in music all his life, at age 15 Fred had hit records with The Continentals, a Texas band that launched the record company that eventually became the Lee Ann Rhymes Empire. In high school he played with John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed in the Texas blues and rock scene. While attending Southern Methodist University he won the outstanding musician/composer award at the American College Jazz Festival. His judges included Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Haynes.

After graduating he was under production contract to Electric Lady Studios in NYC. He then landed a recording contract with Inner City Records and composed and recorded Open Stream and Uncharted Waters and later recorded Fred’s Rescue with west coast label Seabreeze. On the west coast he worked with John Handy, Harold Land and Buddy Colette, and recorded three albums for Chet Baker.

An owner and operator his own 24 track studio, Fred has recorded albums and worked as a sideman with numerous jazz artists. His work as a producer resulted in Juno nominations for two Canadian jazz vocalists. He has been a jazz educator at Santa Barbara City College, Western Washington University and Montana State University. He was instrumental in revitalizing the Santa Barbara Jazz Society and founded and directed the International Jazz Festival in Santa Barbara, CA. In addition, he was director of the North York Jazz Festival in Toronto, Ontario Canada.

Fred feels a deep connection to the people and culture of the Mendocino Coast and he is delighted to be living and working here again. He feels this community understands that music, especially live music, is a shared circle of communication, the audience as much a part of the performance as the musicians. In addition to the artists and groups that he books for the Sequoia Room, Fred will perform on a regular basis. The vibraphonist brings good vibes to the community.

Jazz Journalists Association Salutes North Coast Brewing Company for “All They Do For Jazz”

North Coast Brewing supports the annual Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards by providing their fine Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale for the association’s New York City Awards party and local Jazz Hero celebrations. The association took the opportunity to thank North Coast “for that and for ALL they do for jazz.”

Mack Daddy Beef Stew is a Hearty, Filling, Warm and Fuzzy Meal with a Magic Ingredient: Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale

Erin Lockett is a food science student at UC Davis and focuses her studies on beer making.  As you will see, she’s a big fan of Brother Thelonious Belgian-Style Abbey Ale. We think her beer making studies are off to a great start!

Now that the thought of going outside chills me to the bone, I suppose it’s appropriate to start making some hearty, filling, warm and fuzzy meals. Mack Daddy Beef Stew is all that. Named for the confidence oozing from Thelonious Monk’s depiction on the label, this recipe uses Brother Thelonious, a malty, Belgian-style ale, which puts this stew on a whole ‘nother plane of existence in the flavor department.

BT-stew-5-Neil-Ruud(w)Ingredients
1 ½ lb chuck, cut into ½ inch cubes
¼ lb bacon, cut into ¼ inch slices
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 onion, diced
2 ribs celery, diced
2 carrots, sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
½ can tomato paste
1 cup Brother Thelonious beer
2 cups beef broth
1 potato, russet or gold, cut into mouth-manageable chunks
2 tsp dried thyme
2 tsp dried oregano
2 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
½ cup flour
2 tsp fresh thyme leaves, minced

Equipment
1 large, sharp chef’s knife
1 cutting board
measuring cups (liquid and dry)
measuring spoons
1 oven-safe stock pot, or Dutch oven, 6 qt. capacity, with lid
2 large mixing bowls
1 paper grocery bag, top half cut off
1 silicone spatula
1 pair of tongs
1 slotted spoon1 dinner plate, lined with 3 layers of paper towels

Make Your Seasoning Sack
Place flour, dried thyme, dried oregano, salt, and pepper in your half of a paper grocery bag. Hold the opening together and shake it like a Polaroid picktcha to evenly distribute seasonings. Working in batches, place the chuck in the seasoning sack and lightly coat each piece with the flour mixture. Continue until all pieces are coated, then set aside. This would also be a good time to pre-heat your oven to 300F and move the rack to the bottom third of the oven.

Makin’ Bacon, Among Other Things
Heat up your large, oven-safe vessel over medium heat. Add bacon slices and cook until it is done to your liking, at least five minutes. Remove bacon from the vessel with slotted spoon and drain on a plate lined with paper towels or that other half of the grocery bag. Add the onion, celery, and carrot to the vessel. Cook these guys on medium heat until they are all soft, about 20 minutes or more. If your bacon did not yield much fat, add some butter or olive oil. Remove vegetables from vessel and place in a large mixing bowl, set aside.

MEAT MEAT MEAT
Add butter and olive oil to the pot and melt over medium heat. When the fats are nice and hot (just the way I like it) add pieces of flour-coated chuck but please, whatever you do, do not crowd the pan. The meat should have about a ½ inch radius of free space around it at the very least. So, again, work in batches. Cook the pieces by flipping the pieces as they cook until all the sides are lightly browned, around 4 minutes per batch. When all batches are finished, set aside in another mixing bowl.

Are We There Yet?
Almost. Add some more butter or oil and let it get hot, again. Add garlic and fresh thyme to the pot. Cook on medium heat until it smells super good, around one minute. Turn off the heat now so you won’t start a grease fire. Gently pour in your beer. Use your spatula to scrape the brown bits off of the bottom of the pot. Then, add beef broth and tomato paste. Mix to incorporate. Add the bacon, softened vegetables, potato chunks and chuck back into the pot. Turn the heat back on, but this time, crank it up to high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once a boil is reached, turn off the heat, put the lid on, and place in the pre-heated oven. Let it do its thang in the oven for at least an hour and a half, up to two hours.

Bro-T-Stew-Neil-Ruud(w)The Time Has Come
Hooray! You did it! Let it cool down slightly and go to town. Serve it with fresh crusty bread or some egg noodles. You can even add some frozen peas for extra flair.

Yield: ½ gallon plus a lil’ more

Notes: You can totally ask your butcher to cut the chuck into cubes for you, but I would not buy beef labeled as “stew beef.” It does not have enough fat to taste good for this application. Remember to wash your hand often, especially after handling meat. If you place meat on a cutting board, IMMEDIATELY wash it with hot and soapy water before puttying anything else on it. Same goes with anything (utensils, bowls, etc.) that comes in contact with raw or undercooked meat.

Baritone Monk on JazzWeek Top 100 Albums of 2013

Claire_Daly-(w3)We couldn’t be prouder! The Claire Daly Quartet’s album Baritone Monk made JazzWeek’s Chart of the 100 Top Albums of 2013. This is a big deal in the jazz world. The Quartet is keeping company with Diego Rivera, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, Kevin Eubanks and Christian McBride, amongst others. No one can express the joy of this album’s success better than Claire Daly herself:

If you already bought the CD for $15 dollars, you deserve some kudos. You’ve treated yourself to a sophisticated, nuanced and consummate interpretation of Monk’s music. You’ve acknowledged four outstanding jazz artists deserving of more widespread recognition. You’ve supported the Monk Institute jazz education programs. That’s a lot for $15.

Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original, wrote discerning liner notes for Baritone Monk. Did he anticipate the rousing success of the album? “Monk’s music is notoriously difficult, though you wouldn’t know it from this recording. An exceptional musician, Helen began her piano studies as a classical pianist but switched to jazz in her senior year of music studies at the University of Texas in Austin and never turned back.

It’s quite a collaboration! North Coast Brewing Company of Fort Bragg, California, Boston Public Radio WGBH and Scullers Jazz Club in Boston are joining forces to bring one of the greatest jazz musicians of our times, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, to the Massachusetts airways.

Preparing to celebrate its 25th Anniversary year, Scullers Jazz Club is an award winning Scullers-(w)venue with a commitment to showcase the best in live music and provide a diverse line-up of the greatest talent in jazz, R&B and blues. Live at Scullers is a new venture for Scullers and WGBH. Eric Jackson, known as the “dean of Boston jazz radio,” brings listeners the very best jazz from recordings at the WGBH studios, around the city of Boston, and from across the country on his Eric in the Evening broadcast. So now the two Boston icons – the landmark jazz club and the innovative radio station – have formed a partnership.

North Coast Brewing Company, now celebrating its 25th Anniversary year, has been involved with jazz education and performance since its beginnings in 1988. In 2013 he was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

He has recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, Stan Getz, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys amongst many others. He has performed with John Williams with the Boston Pops, and in the Super Bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle.

In addition to his virtuosic abilities on trumpet and flugelhorn, Arturo Sandoval is also a renowned classical artist, pianist, composer and educator. He performs regularly with symphony orchestras around the world and recorded John Williams Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. He is a composer at home in such diverse genres as jazz, Latin jazz, rock, country, funk, folk and classical music. He has composed for movies, television and stage. Through his residency programs Arturo Sandoval offers one-to-one classes, instruction to small groups, lectures, master classes and clinics. He is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted and renowned musicians of our times.

2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competitionin Washington, DC on September 15 & 16

Wayne-Shorter-byRobertAscroft(w)Washington, D.C. will be the world center of jazz when the prestigious 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition comes to town on September 15th and 16th. The Competition, established in 1987 and recognized for discovering the next generation of jazz masters, will feature fourteen of the world’s most outstanding young jazz saxophonists. They will perform before a panel of renowned jazz musicians including Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis and Wayne Shorter.

jimmyheath(w)The semifinals will be held on Sunday, September 16 from noon to 6:00 pm at the Smithsonian Institute’s Baird Auditorium inside the National Museum of American History. Each competitor will perform for 15 minutes. Three musicians will be selected by the panel of judges to participate in the competition finals at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater at 7:30 pm on Monday, September 16. They will vie for prizes totaling more than $100,000 including a $25,000 first place scholarship and a guaranteed recording contract with Concord Music Group, a $15,000 second place scholarship and a $10,000 third place scholarship.

george_duke(w)An All-Star Gala Concert will follow the final competition. Some of the biggest names in jazz will perform, including Brian Blade, Kurt Elling, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis and Take 6, to name just a few. The Institute will present Wayne Shorter with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extraordinary, six-decade career as a saxophonist, educator and composer. There will be a special tribute to the late George Duke, a longtime friend and supporter of the Institute, who was scheduled to serve as the evening’s Musical Director.

How do you get to be one of the best young jazz musicians in the country? It doesn’t just happen. It takes dedication to the art form, discipline to practice for countless hours, focus during lessons, concentration during rehearsals, respect for colleagues and the creativity and chops to improvise. It also helps to have talent and some great teachers for role models, instruction and inspiration.

The six young musicians who comprise the 2013 Thelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School All-Star Jazz Sextet are among the best young jazz musicians in the country. They attend high schools that participate in the Thelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School Program. Of all the musicians in this nation-wide program they have been selected as the best of the best.

The Program is designed to support the education of gifted musicians who are attending public performing arts high schools across the nation, offering these students a high-level, musically sophisticated, performance-based jazz curriculum. Participants have the opportunity to study with some of the best jazz artists and educators in the world, perform in jazz combos with their peers, and learn, absorb and integrate what they need to gain entry into esteemed music conservatories and university music schools.

The Institute works with each school to develop a course of study that includes classes in theory, composition, improvisation, history, styles and analysis. It also provides ongoing private and group instruction with Institute educators and visiting artists. The students have opportunities to work with jazz masters and perform in high-profile student ensembles.

Over the last six years North Coast Brewing has contributed more than $500,000 to the Monk Institute in support of jazz education through contributions from the sale of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale. In its role as Presenting Sponsor of the Mendocino Music Festival, North Coast Brewing is delighted to bring the Monk Institute’s National High School All-Star Sextet to perform in the 2013 season. This is an opportunity for North Coast Brewing to dovetail two organizations it supports and bring an outstanding group of young jazz players to the Mendocino Coast. The concert will take place on Saturday, July 20th at 3:00 pm at Preston Hall on Main Street in the town of Mendocino. In addition to the performance, the members of the Sextet will conduct a Peer-to-Peer Jazz Workshop, a special event free to students, on Saturday, July 20 at 10:00 am at the Matheson Theater on Ford Street in Mendocino. The workshop will be a micro version of the Peer-to-Peer Jazz Education Initiative, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Through this national initiative, jazz combos in the performing arts high school programs together with established jazz artists, participate in week long performance and information workshops called “informance tours.” Members of the combos perform for and play alongside high school musicians whose schools they are visiting, acting as ambassadors of jazz. They teach their peers about the rich history of jazz and about the deeply held American values it represents: teamwork, collaboration, unity with ethnic diversity, and the vital importance of really listening to one another.

The setting on July 20 will give music students from Northern California the opportunity to work with the exceptionally gifted and motivated members of the All-Star Sextet who are eager to share their skills and knowledge and encourage their peers. Eminent jazz educator and professional bassist, Dr. J.B. Dyas, Vice President for Education and Curriculum Development at the Monk Institute, will accompany the All-Star Sextet on this visit to the Mendocino Coast. Formerly Executive Director of the Brubeck Institute, Dyas has performed across the country, taught students at every level, directed large and small ensembles, developed and implemented new jazz curricula and written for national publications. His dynamic and innovative teaching style engages and inspires. Among the many projects he works on, Dyas visits the eleven performing arts public high schools in the program two to three times a year, works with the students, mentors their teachers in how to better teach jazz and goes on the road with the groups selected for the Peer-to-Peer Informance Tours.

So, will the young musicians in the All-Star Sextet go on to become professional jazz musicians and educators? There’s a very good chance they will. These youngsters have a distinct sense of who they are. They are creative, goal oriented, focused and able to concentrate and build on their skills as individuals and in a group. The have developed self-esteem and confidence. They have high expectations for themselves. They have a passion that inspires and guides them. Whatever they decide to do, they have developed the skills to succeed and to create fulfilling lives for themselves.
