Ensemble VIII Presents a Special Holiday Concert in Austin Texas on December 17th & 18th

Ensemble-VIII-(w)May-2011Ensemble VII, a group of highly trained early music singers, will bring a beautiful and spiritual holiday concert to the City of Austin on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 17th and 18th at 7:30 pm at the St. Louis Catholic Church Chapel.

Under the direction of conductor Dr. James Morrow, the group will perform the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Introduced at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England in 1918, the work features nine readings from the Bible with choral works of the season sung between the readings. At these two performances the Bible selections will be read by prominent citizens of Austin and audience members will be asked to join in the singing of several well-loved and familiar carols. Ensemble VIII co-founder Donald Meineke will be the featured organist for these concerts.

The King’s College version of Lessons and Carols was originally introduced to bring a more imaginative approach to holiday worship. An earlier version of the work, used in 1880 by the Bishop of Truro in Cornwall, was instigated as a 10 pm December 24th service designed specifically to keep men out of pubs. Even so…North Coast Brewing is pleased to be a major sponsor of Ensemble VIII and of the two special concerts in December.

Tickets to these concerts can be purchased online. The St Louis Catholic Church Chapel is located at 7601 Burnet Road in Austin.
