Cow Bop Performs on Wednesday March 12 in the Sequoia Room at the Brewery Taproom

What happens when you mix western swing, blues, honky tonk, bebop and flat out jazz with sultry vocals, thrilling riffs, sassy delivery and gutsy irreverence? Well, pardner…you get Cow Bop, the genre bending cowboy jazz band that’s coming to North Coast Brewing Company’s Sequoia Room on Wednesday, March 12 for two rollickin’ and swingin’ performances.

Led by internationally acclaimed guitarist Bruce Forman, the five piece band features the smoky, barroom vocals of Pinto Pammy, multi-instrumentalist, David Wise on sax and trumpet, and a rhythm section of Alex Frank on bass and Jake Reed on drums that is “as swingin’ and rockin’ as a rodeo bronc but as sure-footed as a prized pack mule.”

Bruce Forman has been an important part of the international jazz scene for more than three decades. Featured as a leader and a sideman at festivals and concert venues throughout the world, his numerous recording and performing credits include the likes of Bobby Hutcherson, Ray Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Richie Cole and countless others. His guitar work is featured throughout Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award winning film, Million Dollar Baby. He is a faculty member at USC’s Thorton School of Music and a long standing member of the Monterey Jazz Festival educational programs.

The Cow Bop evening on March 12 will include two dinner performances in the Sequoia Room at the Brewery Taproom. Pre-paid reservations are required and can be made at 707 964-1286 between 10 am and 5 pm seven days a week. The first dinner seating is at 5:30 with the music beginning at 6:30 pm. The second dinner seating is at 8:00 with the performance at 9 pm. A special Jazz Club Prix-Fixe Dinner with dinner salad and a choice of entrees** will be offered to guests; dessert, beverage and tip are not included.

Cow Bop’s performance promises to bring joy, frolic and excitement to the waning days of winter. The band’s accolades reflect its impact: “It’s hot, jazzy and has a drawl!” said the SF Chronicle. “They put some scoobie-doo in their wahoo!” said Wylie Gustafson of Wylie & The Wild West.

Oregon Coast Jazz Party Celebrates Ten Years of Jazz

John-Clayton-(w)2World class jazz musicians will perform at the 10th annual Oregon Coast Jazz Party Friday, October 4 through Sunday, October 6. Concerts take place at the Newport Performing Arts Center and the Shilo Inn Suites Hotel in Newport. The Jazz Party features visiting musicians playing sets in a variety of groups – duos, trios, quartets and larger jam sessions – over the three day event.

This tenth season celebration has a great line up, including bassist John Clayton, trumpeter Terell Stafford, vocalist Jackie Ryan, tenor sax-man Rickey Woodward and guitarist Bruce Forman. A highlight of this year’s Party is the New York based Bill Charlap Trio, featuring pianist Charlap, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, recognized as one of the top trios in today’s jazz scene. Picante, one of Portland’s finest Afro-Cuban groups, will be a featured band at the Party.

North Coast Brewing is the exclusive provider of beer for the Oregon Coast Jazz Party. Proceeds from sales support the educational jazz programs of the festival.

To launch the Party, North Coast will host a Brewmaster Dinner on Thursday, October 3 at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport to benefit the Oregon Coast Jazz Party.

North Coast’s President and Brewmaster Mark Ruedrich and Senior Vice President/Director of Sales Doug Moody will be at the dinner to talk about the beer, the pairings, and to answer questions. The evening begins at 6:00 pm with beer and cheese pairings and the five course dinner prepared by Chef Mike Downing begins at 7:00 pm.

North Coast Brewing Plays a Major Role in the 2013 Annual Monterey Jazz Festival

MJF-Next-Generation-Performers(w)The 56th annual Monterey Jazz Festival will take place Friday, September 20 through Sunday, September 22 at the Monterey Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. Founded in 1958 by legendary jazz alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons and Ralph Gleason, music critic, San Francisco Chronicle writer and founding editor of Rolling Stone magazine, the MJF presents three days of concerts by some of the best jazz performers in the world. The MJF has the distinction of being the longest running jazz festival in the world.

North Coast Brewing, in its eighth season as the brewery partner to the Monterey Jazz Festival, is the current longest running sustaining partner. This year NCBC is presenting four special beers – Le Merle, PranQster, Old Rasputin and Old Stock Ale - in tastings hosted by the MJF. As usual, Red Seal Ale, Brother Thelonious and Scrimshaw will be served through the Fairgrounds. The tastings are $5 per person. All proceeds go the MJF Education Programs.

NCBC’s Senior Vice President/Director of Sales Doug Moody and Northern California Sales Manager Josh Charlton will be at the tastings to talk about beer and answer questions. The tastings will be in the Festival’s Education Pavilion and are scheduled as follows:

Friday, September 20 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm
Saturday, September 21 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm
Saturday, September 21 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm
Sunday, September 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm

Claire-Daly-Quartet-in-Central-Park.(w)jpgThe Claire Daly Quartet will perform on Saturday, September 21 at 2:30 at the Night Club, one of the eight stages at the Festival. The concert, presented by NCBC, will be a performance of selections from Baritone Monk, a CD produced by Doug Moody and entirely underwritten by NCBC. The Quartet’s players – Claire Daly on baritone sax, Steve Hudson on piano, Mary Ann McSweeney on bass and Peter Grant on drums – swing their way through Thelonious Monk’s repertoire with “…the casual joy of a jam session.” Claire will be at the Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening Beer Tastings to sign CDs and chat about her experiences as a jazz musician and making Baritone Monk.

This year’s Monterey Jazz Festival promises a great line up of artists and concerts, jazz conversations, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, clinics, and an international array of food, NCBC beer and beer tastings, shopping, and festivities spread throughout the 20-acre Monterey Fairgrounds. There’s nothing quite like it anywhere else on the planet and North Coast Brewing is proud to be a part of this celebration of all things jazz!

Why Pilsner is the Best Craft Beer of All Time: So Many Reasons to Love Pilsners

Scrimshaw-Pilsner-Pour(w)As craft beer gains popularity, tap lists grow longer, and beers become more creative and extreme, it sometimes seems that a craft beer fan can have too many options. It may be a wonderful problem to face, but if you’d rather not struggle deciding what beer to try there’s a simple solution. If you just want a satisfying and restorative beer, try a pilsner. The classic golden lager makes for an excellent start to a session, is great before a meal, and pilsners pair wonderfully with many foods. It’s an easy call; try one and see why the pilsner is considered by many brewers to be “the brewer’s beer.”

If you’re not yet a convert to the well-crafted and balanced pilsners, forget your preconceived notions about the style. Pilsner, or simply pils, is known for its delicate color, sparkling carbonation, bready malt body, and spicy and herbal hop character and aroma that is highlighted by a dry, crisp finish. The style was so popular after its invention in 19th-century Bohemia that it swept through Europe before it was taken across the Atlantic by brewers immigrating to America. The American pilsner started off like its continental counterpart: balanced, dry, and with an assertive hop aroma, but American breweries diminished the beer to appeal to a wider audience, and soon the American Pilsner developed into the bland, insipid beer that many people think of today.

Scrimshaw-Brand-Image(w)When first arriving at a bar, I’ll often skim the tap list for a craft pilsner instead of suffering through the analysis paralysis that an impressively long and varied beer list can induce. Once the aromatic pils is in hand, I can more carefully review the menu and tap list for perfect pairings while I enjoy the crisp, refreshing qualities that the pilsner is prized for. Starting off the night with a pilsner works well for a few reasons. It’s commonly recommended to begin a tasting session with a beer that is comparatively light in body and flavor. This allows you to experience the beer’s more subtle flavors before your palate becomes fatigued, and pilsners make excellent “warm-up beers.” The lager’s lively carbonation awakens your taste buds, and the delicate flavors of the signature pilsner malt and European hops are best enjoyed before your palate has been assaulted by massive double IPAs. Picking out these flavors from such a balanced and nuanced brew is a great way to prepare yourself for tasting other brews, and the clean, ester-free finish leaves your palate primed for another sip (or another pint).

San Francisco’s Olympic Club Hosted a North Coast Brewing Co. Beer Dinner on June 28

San Francisco’s historic Olympic Club, the oldest athletic club in the United States, was the site of a memorable North Coast Brewmaster Dinner on June 28. Chef Peter Harvey prepared a five-star menu that began at an informal reception in the club’s lavish Crystal Room with a charcuterie platter, oysters Rockefeller and Bienville, and wild mushroom quesadillas paired with Scrimshaw Pilsner and Red Seal Ale.

The dinner was served in the palm-accented formal dining room and started with a Brandade soufflé and a Pommery mustard reduction which was a great match with Pranqster Belgian-Style Golden Ale. A second course featured a grilled boneless quail with goat cheese polenta, grilled radicchio and aged Balsamico. The Le Merle Saison, which just won the Gold Medal at the Brussels Beer Fest, was a perfect pairing with its tropical fruit flavor note.

The entrée was a hearty braised lamb shank served with aioli and accompanied by a spring vegetable ratatouille. Brother Thelonious Belgian-Style Abbey Ale was a rich, malty complement to this entrée. Dessert was a chocolate assiette, including chocolate walnut terrine, white chocolate gelato and raw chocolate tastings. North Coast’s Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout with its intense chocolate and coffee flavor profile was an obvious choice for this finale.

The Olympic Club’s signature “white glove” service added to the elegance of the evening and left 100 guests very happy, well-fed, and thirst-slaked.

Craft Beer Replaces Wine as Young Women’s Drink of Choice

Meagan O’Brien sipped her beer and bit her tongue as the man next to her tried to describe to his date some of the 60 craft beers at a Milwaukee bar. Turns out, he didn’t know his ales from his hefeweizens. “She kept asking questions, and this guy just kept making up stuff,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien, 31, could have set him straight easily. A sales representative for Tallgrass, a craft beer brewed in Kansas, she’s also a certified cicerone – kind of a sudsy version of a sommelier.

Although O’Brien didn’t correct the man at the bar, she had the satisfaction of knowing that the men-know-beer/women-prefer-wine cliche could be on its way out, thanks to a growing wave of interest in craft beer among women.

Groups for beer-drinking women are springing up nationwide, including an international club called Barley’s Angels. Craft beer sales in general have doubled in the past six years and are set to triple by 2017, according to BeerPulse.com. Many of those customers are women between 25 and 34 who appreciate the nuanced flavors of small-batch beers. According to a 2012 Gallup poll, beer has been the favorite beverage among drinkers since 1985. It typically held second place as the adult beverage of choice for females, but recently, beer has edged out wine among women ages 18 to 34. “I like craft beer a lot, and this seemed like a good opportunity to meet with other people who like beer,” said Sarah Booth, 29, during a Barley’s Angels class about pairing beers with food. “It’s just what I like to drink. It feels more personal drinking something that’s brewed in a small batch.”

Julia Herz, the craft beer program director for the Craft Brewers Association in Colorado, has her own theories about why women are moving toward craft beer, defined as the product of a brewery with annual output of 6 million barrels of beer or fewer. Women in their 20s and 30s are in “the sweet spot” for craft beer consumption, Herz said. “They’re the same quality-minded people who are buying artisanal cheeses and fair trade coffees and who don’t mind waiting for a bartender to shake a craft cocktail. Craft beer is an affordable way to buy artisanal. The cost of a bottle of beer, usually less than a bottle wine, affords aficionados a chance to sample several craft beer flavors for a simple trade up in price compared to wine,” Herz said.

Image also factors into the reason that woman are gravitating to beer. “This is bold for me to say, but beer in the past has been marketed as a gender-specific beverage to men,” Herz said. While some macro beer producers use women in tank tops to sell beer, the 2,300 craft brewers in the U.S. generally market in a way that’s not gender specific.

If craft beer producers have learned to make beer a genderless beverage, bartenders are still on a learning curve. Beer expert O’Brien recalls the time she ordered a $12 glass of Angry Monk. The bartender asked what she thought of it, and she mentioned that it seemed a little sour – a term meaning that the beer would benefit from more time in the bottle to mature the taste. He offered to add soda water.

Lucy Saunders, author of The Best of American Beer and Food: Pairing & Cooking with Craft Beer and beercook.com says those bartenders are missing the boat by underestimating a woman’s palate and knowledge of beer.

Still, beer “is a little bit of a boys’ club” Rachel Reiman said during a Barley’s Angels home brewing session in Milwaukee. She notices that whenever she and her husband tour a brewery and mention that they’re home brewers, “they immediately start talking to my husband.”
