Brother Thelonious Quintet

BROTHER THELONIOUS – THE CD –

North Coast Brewing’s Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale has taken on a new persona with the introduction of The Brother Thelonious Quintet.  The quintet is made up of Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance alumni with Helen Sung, class of ’97, on piano; Alan Hampton, class of ’05, on bass; James Alsanders, class of ’05, on drums; Wayne Escoffery, class of 99, on tenor sax and Ambrose Akinmusire, class of ’07, on trumpet.  Vocalist Gretchen Parlato, class of ’03, performs on the closing track.  The Brother Thelonious Quintet CD, released in September, includes new arrangements of six classic Thelonious Monk compositions along with four original tunes composed by members of the quintet.

Legendary Jazz bassist Ron Carter, in his liner notes, calls the Quintet “A breath of fresh air” and suggests “some serious listening” to this group that “I would stop to hear at the drop of a drum stick.”

The entire cost of the project was underwritten by the North Coast Brewing Company as a tribute to the great work of the TMIJ.  100% of sales proceeds from the CD, which was produced by North Coast’s Doug Moody and T.S. Monk, will be donated to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to further international Jazz education programs.

The CD is available on this website and at the brewery gift shop!
