North Coast Scores Big At
World Beer Championships

Le Merle named Best Cult Brew
North Coast Brewing was well received at the recent BTI World Beer Championships in Chicago scoring three medals (2 Gold and a Silver).  The brewery’s 20th Anniversary Ale, an amazing beer brewed with agave nectar,  scored  a 93 in the professional blind tasting and was awarded  a Gold Medal as was Le Merle Belgian Style Saison with a score of 90.  Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale was close behind with a rating of 89.  This recognition solidifies North Coast’s preeminence as a brewer of Belgian style ales and teams these beers with their Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale which has won four Gold Medals at the World Beer Championships as well as medals at the Great American Beer Fest and the World Beer Cup.

Acme’s Quacky the Duck Has Another Moment in the Sun. Back in the late 40’s and the early 50’s when Acme Beer MascotAcme Beer was the best-selling beer in the American West, one of their best loved salesmen was Quacky the Duck. Quacky took life through the voice of Jack Wagner on KMJ radio in Fresno and cartoonist Phil Roman, both of whom went on to greater fame. Wagner became the voice of Donald Duck at the Disney theme parks and Roman became an Emmy-winning TV producer of the Simpsons and other cartoon shows. Quacky, alas, retired from public view and has just recently made a cameo appearance in the Fresno Bee. His fine beers, however, are enjoying a renaissance through the North Coast Brewing Co.

Thanks for the memories, Quacky.

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial StoutChocolate Tarte & Old Rasputin!
To illustrate suggestions for pairing beer with food, author Brian Freedman offers: North Coast Brewing Co.'s Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout with a chocolate tarte. Says Freedman, "A successful marriage of beer and food is often just as much about alchemy and the magic of the unexpected as it is about a thought-out plan of attack."  Philadelphia Weekly

Red Seal Ale in China...I have never seen my favourite beer, Red Seal Ale, outside of its home state of California. Yet here it is, in a part of China that I had barely heard of only a few weeks earlier – two bottles for about £4 during happy hour...

Swedish paper praises Brother Thelonious
Brother Thelonious in SwedenBrother Thelonius (# 1588, 24.95 Swedish kronas, 355 ml) is made by North Coast Brewery, located just north of San Francisco.  This ale plays on the brewery’s finer taste bud harmonies, and pays tribute to the jazz musician Thelonius Monk.  It displays a reddish-brown teak-color and a heavy foam crown.  The well-balanced aroma hints at rye bread and flowery chamomile.  The flavor is sweeter than the scent and doesn’t deliver the same knock-out punch that Mark Ruedrich often prefers.
