On October 3, 2010, the Brasserie collaborated with North Coast Brewing Co., pairing our American-brewed Belgian-style beers with an exciting menu. The dinner was a fundraiser for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The sold-out event was attended by the Institute's Chairman, T.S.Monk III, and Kevin Eubanks, former musical director of The Tonight Show, now director of the Institute's Jazz in the Classroom program, as well as NCBC founders, President Mark Ruedrich, Executive VP Tom Allen and Senior VP Doug Moody.

North Coast in Chicago
North Coast brewmaster, Mark Ruedrich, recently teamed-up with James Beard award-winning chef, Paul Kahan to stage an amazing dinner at Chicago's Publican restaurant. The restaurant, which is the go-to spot in the city's trendy Fulton Market district, features pork and seafood dishes that are pristine and simply prepared. The bar offerings are "beer-centric", among the best to be found anywhere and are served in an environment with communal tables reminiscent of a European beer hall.
There was a truffle focus to the evening's menu and each of Chef Kahan's dishes was paired with a different North Coast beer:
Kushi oysters and Nantucket scallops with Bergamont oil and white Alba truffles.
Le Merle Belgian-style Saison Ale
Buckwheat capellini alla chittara with brown butter, pine nuts, Parmesan vechi rosa and white Alba truffles.
Pranqster Belgian-style Golden Ale
Smoked Pekin duck breast and sausage with rutabaga, dried apricots and black Perigord truffles.
Brother Thelonious Belgian-style Abbey Ale
Braised beef tongue with candied nicoise olives and black Perigord truffles.
Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
Dark chocolate financier with sour cherries, cherry pit ice cream and black Perigord truffles.

Acme’s Quacky the Duck Has Another Moment in the Sun.
Back in the late 40’s and the early 50’s when Acme Beer was the best-selling beer in the American West, one of their best loved salesmen was Quacky the Duck. Quacky took life through the voice of Jack Wagner on KMJ radio in Fresno and cartoonist Phil Roman, both of whom went on to greater fame. Wagner became the voice of Donald Duck at the Disney theme parks and Roman became an Emmy-winning TV producer of the Simpsons and other cartoon shows. Quacky, alas, retired from public view and has just recently made a cameo appearance in the Fresno Bee. His fine beers, however, are enjoying a renaissance through the North Coast Brewing Co.
Thanks for the memories, Quacky.

Le Merle Named Best Cult Brew by SF Weekly
SF Weekly has named Le Merle Best Cult Brew: "...North Coast's Le Merle...is the perfect fusion between American and Belgian brewing traditions."
Every California brewmaster these days seems to want to be a Belgian monk - one who still rocks out to Megadeth and rides to Mass on his hog. We're still scarred from some of the saccharine, piercingly bitter hop-heavy Belgian-style dubbels and triples we've tasted. But North Coast's Le Merle, a Fort Bragg beer that makes it onto most of the cult beer lists in town, is the perfect fusion between American and Belgian brewing traditions. A saison-style beer, the Le Merle begins like a piña colada, albeit one whizzed up with a handful of fresh herbs. It has enough acidity and hops to keep the flavor focused, and a light, malty sweetness that lingers. The Le Merle goes with roast pork. It goes with spring vegetables. It goes with small talk and cigarettes. The only problem: Since it contains almost 8 percent alcohol, you'll have to switch to a lager to avoid getting smashed.

Production Expansion
Those two new humps that have just appeared on the brewery roof are not our lame attempt at a camel impersonation. We're simply outgrowing our building. Increased demand for North Coast beers has called for us to add new production tanks, and these two 500 barrel stainless steel fermenters are so big that we've had to redesign the roof of the building to fit them in. These babies are big enough to swim laps in. We've also added a 500 barrel bright beer tank and a new hot liquor tank. The bottling line and storage space have been reconfigured for better efficiency, and our production capacity has been increased about 30%.
This expansion is a major step in our long-term growth plan and positions the brewery to service a continuation of the healthy sales increases we've seen over the last few years.

The Poetics of Beer Packaging: Colored Horse Studios and the North Coast Brewing Company
Take one poet trained in typography and history of the book,
add amazing beer and some great illustrators,
and you would have a distinctive
lineup of beer packaging that sets you apart as a craft brewery, which is exactly what North Coast Brewing achieved when they hired graphic designer and poet Theresa Whitehill in 1999 to begin reevaluating their beer packaging.

North Coast Releases ’09 Old Stock Ale
North Coast Brewing Co. has announced the much anticipated release of its 2009 vintage Old Stock Ale. Since it sprang onto the beer scene in 2000 with the award of a Platinum medal at the World Beer Championships, Old Stock has won two Great American Beer Fest medals as well as additional WBC medals.
Brewed in the classic English old ale tradition, the Old Stock recipe includes Maris-Otter malts, Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops and delivers a very friendly 11.5% ABV. The brew’s loyal fan base has learned that the beer cellars beautifully and can be laid down, literally for years, with the rich, winey flavors becoming softer and even more seductive with age.
“I think this is one of the finest beers we produce.” said Mark Ruedrich, North Coast’s brewmaster. “It has an elegance that transcends the usual expectations of beer. We’re quite proud of it.”
Look for Old Stock wherever fine beers are sold.

20th Anniversary Celebration
North Coast Brewing Co. completed the celebration of its 20th anniversary on Sunday, September 7. The festivities began on Friday evening with a banquet honoring many of those in the industry who had contributed to the brewery’s success. That was followed by a beer and cheese tasting on Saturday as a benefit for the Coast Humane Society. The event featured artisan cheeses paired with North Coast brews including Brother Thelonious, Old Stock Ale, Le Merle and others.
The week-end culminated on Sunday with a sell-out concert by the New Orleans group, the subdudes, that was attended by over 900 very enthusiastic fans. North Coast Brewing sponsored the concert as a fund raiser for the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and the North Coast Salmon Fisheries.
The brewery is proud to have been an important part of the Mendocino Coast community for twenty years as an employer, a social hub and a contributor to making life here even more idyllic.

Introducing Le Merle
Our
new Belgian Farmhouse Style Ale
(Saison) called Le Merle – The
Blackbird, is now widely available at retail outlets in 750ml corked and wired bottles. This subtle, sophisticated beer has already gotten some
critical endorsement. It’s
lovely stuff traditionally brewed using a unique Belgian yeast strain.
Le Merle clothing now available, see our online
store!
Barrel-aged
Beers
North Coast has an active program of developing even more amazing beers than are in the regular portfolio. Brewmaster, Mark Ruedrich has created some small batch, barrel-aged beers that are truly remarkable.
Aging high gravity beers in oak barrels adds a whole new
level of complexity and enjoyment to the flavor profile, and our
experience with the technique has been stunning. Coming in
the wake of the spectacular Old Rasputin X which was aged in whiskey
barrels, Mark has had great success with some ’05 Old Stock
Ale aged in Bourbon barrels and some in brandy barrels. It’s
exquisite, but there’s not much of it. It’s available
only at the brewery retail store or through mail order in California.
And, there’s yet another batch of Old Rasputin that’s
been aging for several months in whiskey barrels. Stay tuned
and keep an eye on the website for details.
North Coast Voted Best Northern California
Brewery
The readers of the Northwest Brewing News just voted
North Coast Brewing the Best Brewery in Northern California.
We’re really pleased about this one. They also named Old
Rasputin as the Best Imperial Stout. The folks in the Northwest
have had a head start on the rest of the country where craft
beers are concerned, so we think it’s a pretty knowledgeable
bunch….with great taste. Thanks, guys.

North Coast Brewing Company Explores Beer & Food
North Coast Brewing Company
(NCBC), pioneers in the production of microbrews since 1988, is
educating consumers about pairing craft beers and fine food, with
guidance from noted chef and author John Ash.

the full line of NCBC beers to students of the “Sophisticated
Palate”, a program of the Culinary Institute of America
(CIA) at Greystone, Napa Valley. Students tasted all of
North Coast Brewing Company’s beers – from light and
fruity to rich and robust. Following the tasting, the participants
enjoyed a seven-course dinner

Brother Thelonious Swings
With the developing interest in Belgian abbey ales and the monasteries
that brew them, it’s time to remind the world that here in
the U.S., we have a Monk of our own.
Jazz icon Thelonious Monk is
the inspiration for North Coast Brewing’s new Belgian-style
abbey ale called, appropriately enough, Brother Thelonious. The
beer is being released in conjunction with the Thelonious
Monk Institute of Jazz, and the brewery will make a contribution
to the Institute for every case sold to support jazz education.
Like a Belgian “Dark Strong Ale”,
the beer is rich and robust with an ABV of 9%. The package is a
750 ml bottle with a traditional cork and wire finish or 12oz 4
packs and features a label picturing the jazz master himself.
“Being a huge fan of Monk and his music has made working
on this project something special”, said Doug Moody, North
Coast’s Senior Vice-President and National Sales Manager. “We’re
honored to be associated with a world class organization like the
Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and feel that this terrific beer
will represent its namesake well.”
Look
for Brother Thelonious wherever fine beers are sold and fine sounds
are heard.
When you buy Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale you also
help to support the Thelonious
Monk Institute of Jazz whose mission is to offer the world's most promising
young musicians college level training by America's jazz masters
and to present public school-based jazz education programs for young
people around the world. All of these programs are offered
free of charge to the students and schools.
North Coast Chosen as
Official
Brewery of the
Monterey Jazz Festival
This coming year marks the 51st anniversary of the
Monterey Jazz Festival – the longest-running jazz festival in the world.
And, we’re again very pleased to have been chosen as the official
brewery for the event. It allows us to further our support of jazz
education. Our Brother Thelonious will be featured and other North
Coast beers also will be available there to go along with the great
sounds.
